Consent to your information leaving Zimbabwe

Version 0.1-draft

This is a draft, with a lawyer now. It is the wording presented for signature today; when the reviewed wording replaces it, everyone who signed this version is asked to sign the new one, and keeps their copy of this one.

Your information is stored outside Zimbabwe

Before you can use Meridian, we need your agreement to this. Please read it — it is short, and it is the only part of signing up where you have a genuine choice to make.

Where your information goes. Meridian's database is hosted in Ireland, by a company called Supabase, which runs on Amazon Web Services data centres there. Some of the other services we use to send your emails, show you maps and check names against sanctions lists are also based outside Zimbabwe. They are all listed in our Privacy Notice.

Why it goes there. There is no Zimbabwean hosting option for the technology Meridian is built on. Ireland is where our provider's nearest suitable data centre is, and it is subject to the European Union's data protection law — among the strictest in the world — with an active regulator enforcing it.

What is sent. Everything described in our Privacy Notice: your name and contact details, your company's registration and tax details, the identity documents you upload, your orders and deliveries, and — if you are a driver — your location while you are on a job.

How it is protected. Your information is encrypted while travelling and while stored. Access is restricted to the people who need it. The database enforces separation so one company cannot read another's records. Our provider is contractually bound to use your information only to provide the service to us, and to tell us promptly if anything goes wrong.

How long it stays. For as long as your account is open, and then for the retention periods set out in our Privacy Notice — generally seven years for trading records, and at least five years for identity and sanctions-screening records.

Your choice. You can agree, or you can decline.

☐ I agree that my information may be stored and processed in Ireland as described above.

*If you decline, we cannot open your account. This is not a penalty — the platform is built on a database that lives in Ireland, so there is no version of Meridian we can offer you that keeps your information inside Zimbabwe. We would rather tell you that plainly than pretend the choice is wider than it is.*
